THE EVE EDITION

AFTERGLOW | MON OCT 12

Allysha Chapman got her goodbye at BMO Field on Monday, just not the result to go with it. She came on in the 89th minute for her 100th and final cap with Canada chasing a fourth goal that never came, and Denmark held on to win a 4-3 friendly that swung from a teenager’s first assist to three Danish goals in nine minutes and back again. Chapman, the left back from Courtice, Ontario, was celebrated by teammates and the crowd at the whistle, on a day when three of her longtime teammates were honored for 150 caps.

Monday kept rewarding whoever refused to settle. The Ericeira final was decided in its last minutes, and in Wuhan the home crowd watched two Chinese players ranked outside the top 200 beat seeded opponents, one of them after facing three match points. Even the friendlies kept turning, from San Salvador to Andorra la Vella, where a team beaten 5-0 on Friday won.

Denmark Spoils Chapman’s Farewell

Denmark beat Canada 4-3 in Toronto as Allysha Chapman played her last minutes for her country. DB Pridham scored her first international goal in the 10th minute off 18-year-old Kaylee Hunter’s first assist, but Olivia Holdt chipped Kailen Sheridan from near halfway, Pernille Harder scored her 87th international goal and Holdt added another, all inside nine minutes. Évelyne Viens scored four minutes after halftime, Janni Thomsen curled in Denmark’s fourth on the counter, and Olivia Smith’s 70th-minute goal left Canada one short.

“We should have been 2-0 up before they scored their first goal,” Casey Stoney said. Kadeisha Buchanan, Jessie Fleming and Ashley Lawrence were honored for 150 caps, and Canada’s next match is the Concacaf W quarterfinal against Panama on November 28. Chapman, a national-team player for 12 years, won Olympic bronze in Rio and gold in Tokyo.
