THE EVE EDITION

AFTERGLOW | SAT OCT 3

Saturday’s completed edition begins with players who changed the shape of their competitions. Alina Charaeva knocked out the newest world #1 in Beijing, while 16-year-old Sun Xinran turned her tour-level debut into a third-round date with Coco Gauff.

In Europe, Bayern Munich cleared the Frauen-Bundesliga’s last unbeaten challenger and Manchester United found an early goal that Liverpool could never erase.

By night the day had new champions and sharp swings. Natalia Silva took the vacant UFC flyweight title in Salt Lake City, Debinha’s hat trick carried Kansas City past Bay FC and #1 Nebraska swept Maryland before a record crowd. Charli Hately won the biggest surfing title of her career in Brazil, and Jeeno Thitikul takes a three-shot lead into Sunday at the LOTTE Championship.

Charaeva Topples New #1 Rybakina as 16-Year-Old Sun Advances in Beijing

Alina Charaeva turned Elena Rybakina’s first match as world #1 into the defining upset of the China Open’s second round, rallying for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in Beijing. The 24-year-old Armenian, ranked #118 and playing only her 17th tour-level main draw, broke for 4-2 in the deciding set, consolidated at love and served out the biggest win of her career. Rybakina finished with seven double faults and said her foot began hurting late in the match after a draining stretch since winning the U.S. Open. Charaeva became only the ninth player outside the Top 100 to beat a world #1 since the WTA rankings began. China found a second breakthrough when 16-year-old wild card Sun Xinran, ranked #582, beat #27 Cristina Bucșa 6-4, 7-5 in her WTA main-draw debut. Sun became the first player born in 2010 to win a completed match at WTA 1000 level or above and earned a third-round meeting with #3 Coco Gauff.

Bühl Gives Bayern Five-Point Lead as Manchester United Edges Liverpool

Klara Bühl finished an 18th-minute counterattack to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt, keeping the champions perfect through six Frauen-Bundesliga matches and opening a five-point lead. Ena Mahmutović twice denied Laura Freigang as Bayern extended its unbeaten league run to 48 matches, though Giulia Gwinn’s late ankle injury supplied the day’s concern. RB Leipzig beat Mainz 5-0 and Freiburg won 1-0 at Köln.
