The second weekend of the Barclays Women’s Super League brings almost the entire league onto the field Sunday, beginning with Manchester United and Chelsea and ending more than six hours later with defending champion Manchester City at Aston Villa. Six matches fill the schedule, giving the opening weekend’s early impressions their first real chance either to strengthen or unravel.
The biggest test comes immediately. Chelsea travels to Manchester United after an opening 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, a result that left the Blues chasing their first league win of the season much earlier than expected. Chelsea controlled large portions of that match and opened the scoring through Lauren James, but an own goal allowed Villa to leave London with a point. Sunday now sends Chelsea to one of the league’s more difficult away grounds with little opportunity to ease into the season.
