Chelsea spent a few hours on top of the Women's Super League on Sunday after a 6-2 rout of Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, and Manchester City took first place straight back. City beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-2 at home to make it six wins from six and keep a two-point lead over Chelsea after Matchday 6.
Chelsea needed a second-half surge to break open a level game. Lauren James scored a solo goal in the 25th minute, but Matilda Vinberg headed in Julie Blakstad's cross in the 41st to send Spurs into the break at 1-1. Chelsea then scored three times in nine minutes. Ellie Carpenter finished Alyssa Thompson's square ball in the 58th, James struck again on her own in the 62nd and Sjoeke Nüsken converted Keira Walsh's pass in the 67th. Maika Hamano, facing the club where she spent last season on loan, curled in a shot from almost 30 yards in the 86th. Signe Gaupset replied for Tottenham a minute later before Carpenter added her second from another Walsh delivery in stoppage time. Erin Cuthbert, the newly named club captain, came off the bench around the hour for her first appearance of the season.
