THE EVE EDITION
FIRST BLUSH | MON OCT 12
Canada says goodbye to Allysha Chapman at BMO Field this afternoon, and the rest of Monday runs from the Portuguese coast to the home of golf. The women at the EDP Ericeira Pro return after the men’s quarterfinals with a Challenger Series title to decide, Texas opens the St Andrews Links Collegiate on the Jubilee Course with the world’s #1 amateur, and Wuhan, the last WTA 1000 event of the season, begins without defending champion Coco Gauff or Elena Rybakina, both withdrawn, while top seed Aryna Sabalenka waits behind a first-round bye.
Five women’s friendlies fill the international window from Chișinău to San Salvador, #20 BYU plays a Big 12 match in Cincinnati, and Liv Morgan opens her new reign as Women’s World Champion on Raw. The WNBA Finals are five days away, with Atlanta and Golden State waiting for Saturday’s Game 1 on NBC and Peacock.
Denmark at Canada
Canada and Denmark finish their October pair at BMO Field after Friday’s 1-1 draw in Montréal, where Pernille Harder finished a 24th-minute counter and Olivia Smith equalized in the 84th with her sixth goal for Canada. Monday is Allysha Chapman’s 100th and final appearance for her country. Casey Stoney is without the injured Vanessa Gilles, and Canada has not beaten a top-15 opponent since Stoney took over in January 2025. Denmark is ranked #12, three places below Canada. Before Friday, the teams had not met since Canada’s 1-0 win at the 2017 Algarve Cup.
EVE’s Edge: Canada, 2-1. Smith has become the attack’s reference point, and a home crowd saying goodbye to Chapman should push Canada to finally close out a top-15 opponent.
#13 Alexandra Eala vs. Han Shi
Alexandra Eala, the #13 seed and world #18 from the Philippines, opens on Center Court after leaving the Asian Games with a bronze medal, beaten in the semifinals by Xiyu Wang. Han Shi, a Chinese qualifier ranked #231, beat Peyton Stearns 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 and Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets to reach the main draw, and she pushed Qinwen Zheng to three sets in the first round in Beijing before losing 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. The winner meets Ekaterina Alexandrova or Leylah Fernandez in the second round.
EVE’s Edge: Eala in straight sets. Shi has matches in her legs and a home crowd behind her, but Eala’s left-handed patterns should control the longer rallies, and a gap of more than 200 ranking places should show by the second set.
EDP Ericeira Pro Women’s Finals
The women’s field waits out the men’s quarterfinals at Ribeira d’Ilhas, then surfs through to a champion in a single day, with Championship Tour places riding on every heat. Ratings leader Sierra Kerr reignited her qualification push in the Round of 32, and she is joined in the closing rounds by Sally Fitzgibbons, Vahine Fierro, Brisa Hennessy, Sophia Medina, Alyssa Spencer, Lucy Darragh, Anat Lelior and Bella Kenworthy. Portugal’s own Teresa Bonvalot carries the hopes of the home crowd.
EVE’s Edge: Sierra Kerr wins Ericeira. Fierro is the most dangerous surfer in the field on a good wave, but Kerr has the event’s best form and the most to gain, and a title would turn her ratings lead into a Championship Tour place.
Texas vs. Penn vs. Washington vs. St Andrews
The St Andrews Links Collegiate opens with stroke play on the Jubilee Course, the first of two rounds that crown the individual champions and seed Wednesday’s medal match play on the Old Course, where the team title is decided. #10 Texas brings Farah O’Keefe, the NCAA champion, ANNIKA Award winner and world #1 amateur, with #19 Lauren Kim behind her. Washington arrives with Hannah Ounap, a recent Big Ten Golfer of the Week. Six play and five count each day, and Penn and the host University of St Andrews complete the field.
EVE’s Edge: O’Keefe leads after the first round. She shared medalist honors at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup to open the season, and the Jubilee rewards exactly the control that made her the best amateur in the world.
#20 BYU at Cincinnati
BYU arrives at Gettler Stadium off its first Big 12 loss of the season, a 2-0 defeat at #16 West Virginia on Thursday in which the Cougars outshot the Mountaineers 19-8 and hit the crossbar through Bella Woods and Emma Hamberlin without scoring. At 7-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference, BYU needs the points to keep pace in the Big 12 race on the second leg of its road swing. Cincinnati is 3-5-4 and 1-3-1, but the Bearcats won their last match, 1-0 over Utah on Thursday, and have drawn four times this season.
EVE’s Edge: BYU, 2-0. The Cougars created more than enough chances in Morgantown, and Cincinnati has scored more than once in a match only twice all season, so the finishing should return here.
