THE EVE EDITION
FIRST BLUSH | THU OCT 15
Wuhan lost both of its top seeds before the third round, and the quarterfinals that start tonight are wide open. Diana Shnaider has not dropped a set all week, Jelena Ostapenko has fought her way through two straight three-setters, and they meet for the first time with a place in the semifinals at stake. Only two top-10 seeds are still in the draw, Elina Svitolina and Iga Świątek.
Before that, the college evening is about protecting perfect records. Wake Forest is unbeaten at Spry Stadium and hosts ranked Florida State, and Nebraska takes its 17-0 start to Northwestern. Indi Hartwell’s first night as Knockouts World Champion puts her back in the ring with the woman she took the title from, and overnight the women’s world title race moves to the waves at Supertubos.
#11 Diana Shnaider vs. Jelena Ostapenko
Diana Shnaider has not dropped a set in Wuhan. She reached her fourth WTA 1000 quarterfinal by beating #6 Karolína Muchová 7-5, 6-3, her third top-10 win of the season. Jelena Ostapenko has done it the hard way. The 2017 French Open champion saved three match points against #2 Jessica Pegula, then beat Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 for her first Wuhan quarterfinal since that 2017 season. They have never played each other, and the contrast is sharp: the left-handed Shnaider wins with consistency and angles, while Ostapenko goes for the lines on almost every ball.
EVE’s Edge: Shnaider to win in three sets. Ostapenko can take a set on power alone, but Shnaider has been the steadier player all week and will win the longer rallies.
#24 Florida State at #4 Wake Forest
Wake Forest is 10-1-1, perfect at Spry Stadium and fourth in the RPI, and goalkeeper Valentina Amaral is a big reason why. She leads the ACC with six shutouts and a 0.458 goals-against average, and her 19 career shutouts rank third in program history. Goals of their own have been harder to find lately, and the Demon Deacons drew 0-0 at Miami on Saturday. Florida State is 5-1-3 and 4-1-1 away from home, with road wins at Georgia and NC State, and Sam Erbach leads the Seminoles with four goals and four assists. The series is level at 14-14-6, and it is Wake Forest’s annual Pink Match.
EVE’s Edge: Wake Forest to win, 1-0. Florida State travels well, but Amaral has been the best goalkeeper in the conference and Spry has been a fortress.
#1 Nebraska at Northwestern
Nebraska is 17-0, holds all 63 first-place votes in the AVCA poll and has won 48 straight regular-season matches. Last week the Huskers swept #15 Indiana and #7 Wisconsin, and three of them won Big Ten honors: Harper Murray averaged 5.17 kills per set on .429 hitting, Bergen Reilly was Setter of the Week at 12.33 assists per set and Manaia Ogbechie led the conference with 2.17 blocks per set. Nebraska has won 23 straight away from home and 18 straight against Northwestern, whose last win in the series came in 2011. The Huskers are home Saturday against #13 Purdue.
EVE’s Edge: Nebraska to win, 3-0. Northwestern has to get past Ogbechie at the net and Andi Jackson, whose .487 hitting percentage leads the conference.
Xia Brookside, Zoey Serrano & Shayna Baszler vs. Indi Hartwell, Gabby Forza & Harley Hudson
Four days after Bound For Glory, Indi Hartwell and Xia Brookside are back in the same ring. Hartwell took the Knockouts World Championship from Brookside on Sunday, pinning her after 10 minutes with Mickie James as special guest referee and ending a reign that began at Slammiversary in June and included five defenses. Brookside now teams with Zoey Serrano and Shayna Baszler, who won the Knockouts World Tag Team Championship the same night, while Hartwell brings Gabby Forza and Harley Hudson. The show comes from the Dothan Civic Center as part of the Hardys’ 35th anniversary celebration.
EVE’s Edge: Brookside’s team to win. The new tag champions give her the stronger side, and beating the new champion’s team would put Brookside first in line.
Women’s Opening Round at Peniche
The Championship Tour reaches Supertubos with the women’s world title race tight at the top. Gabriela Bryan, who opened the season by winning at Bells Beach, leads the rankings, with Carissa Moore only a few hundred points behind. Erin Brooks arrives having won three straight Championship Tour events after finishing third here in 2025, and Molly Picklum is defending the world title she won last year. The opening round sends two Portuguese surfers straight at the contenders: Picklum faces Yolanda Hopkins and Moore faces Teresa Bonvalot, with the home crowd behind both.
EVE’s Edge: Picklum to beat Hopkins. Hopkins will have the crowd and local knowledge, but the world champion’s experience in big heats should carry her through.
