Giugliano Answers a Teenager’s Olimpico as Roma Opens Title Defense

Defending champion Roma opened its Serie A Women season with a 3-1 win at Sassuolo on Sunday, but not before 17-year-old Giulia Guerzoni briefly stole the afternoon. Martina Piemonte put Roma ahead in the 35th minute. Guerzoni equalized by scoring directly from a corner in the 50th, becoming the first player born in 2009 to score in Italy's top division. Roma captain Manuela Giugliano needed only three minutes to restore the lead, then added her second in stoppage time. It was the third meeting between the clubs in a month, and a winning return for Roma coach Gianpiero Piovani, a longtime former Sassuolo coach.

Inter also opened with three points, beating Fiorentina 2-0 at the Arena Civica in David Sassarini's first Serie A match in charge. After Elisa Polli hit the crossbar in a scoreless first half, Lina Magull pounced on a short clearance in the 72nd minute. It was her fifth Serie A goal against Fiorentina, her most against any opponent in the league. Brittany Raphino flicked in a header in stoppage time for her third goal across all competitions this season. The win came days after Inter's first-ever Women's Champions League victory, against Häcken on Tuesday.
