Seattle Reign FC went to Chicago needing points and came away with all three, beating the Chicago Stars FC 3-1 on Sunday night at Martin Stadium in Evanston to climb back into eighth place and above the NWSL playoff line.
Maddie Mercado decided it. She opened the scoring in the 38th minute at the end of a move that began with Ainsley McCammon's long ball and ran through Jess Fishlock, who had already seen an early finish ruled offside. Nerilia Mondesir doubled the lead in the 80th minute, less than six minutes after coming off the bench, for her second goal of the season. Four minutes later Mercado headed in Brittany Ratcliffe's cross for her ninth and tenth goals of the year. She leads the Reign in scoring and is the 14th player in the league to reach 10 goals this season.
