Real Madrid answered a 7-0 defeat at Barcelona with a 3-1 win over Espanyol at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano on Saturday night, climbing back into second place in Liga F on 16 points after seven matches. Pau Quesada's side had to wait until first-half stoppage time to break through, when a Sara Däbritz cross drifted beyond Espanyol goalkeeper Meri Muñoz in the 46th minute. Lineth Beerensteyn, who hit the crossbar in the seventh minute and was denied one-on-one by Muñoz midway through the second half, doubled the lead in the 70th. Felicia Schröder, on as a 61st-minute substitute for Athenea del Castillo, beat her marker with a sharp dribble inside the area and finished in the 80th. Bicho pulled one back for Espanyol two minutes into added time.
The defeat ended a four-match unbeaten run for Sara Monforte's Espanyol, who stay on eight points in ninth. Real Madrid are 5-1-1 in the league, two points behind leaders Barcelona, who have a match in hand.
