Stanford delivered the sharpest upset of Friday’s four assigned field-hockey games, scoring one minute into overtime to beat #3 Duke 3-2. Bea Varley finished the move from Gemma Townsend for the winner, closing a comeback that also featured 10 saves from goalkeeper Anya Jackson. It was Stanford’s highest-ranked victory in more than 25 years, matching the program benchmark set by a win over #3 Michigan State in 2001.
Mia Clark put Stanford ahead only 56 seconds into regulation, but Duke answered from the penalty spot and moved in front 2-1 through Alaina McVeigh. Puja Nanjappa’s equalizer forced overtime before Varley ended it. Stanford improved to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in the ACC; Duke fell to 9-3 and 4-1, losing its first conference game.
