Muchová and Nosková Carry Czechia to 12th Billie Jean King Cup Title

Czechia is back on top of the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time since 2018. Karolína Muchová beat Anhelina Kalinina 6-2, 6-3 before Linda Nosková held off Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6(5) to complete a 2-0 victory over Ukraine in Sunday's final in Shenzhen. The championship is Czechia's 12th, second only to the United States in competition history.

Muchová gave Czechia a commanding start. Kalinina had won all three of her matches earlier in the week, but the world #8 broke her twice in the first set, never faced a break point and allowed her only three points on return in the second. Muchová closed the match with a forehand winner to put Czechia one win from the title.

Svitolina gave Ukraine its best chance when she broke Nosková for a 3-1 lead in the opening set. Nosková broke straight back and won five straight games to take the set 6-3. The second set produced no break points and not a single deuce game, sending the championship to a tiebreak. Svitolina hit back-to-back aces to level it at 3-3, but Nosková reached 6-3 and three championship points. Svitolina saved two before Nosková pulled her wide and drove a forehand into the open court, then dropped onto her back as captain Barbora Strýcová and the Czech team rushed out to celebrate.

Czechia swept Great Britain, Spain and Ukraine 2-0 in Shenzhen, so doubles world #1 Kateřina Siniaková never had to play. "I'm really glad that we didn't ever have to go into doubles," Nosková said. Ukraine played without world #10 Marta Kostyuk, who was out with a right wrist injury, and still reached its first final, beating Belgium in the quarterfinals and ending two-time defending champion Italy's reign in the semifinals.

The title completed a remarkable season for Nosková. The 21-year-old beat Muchová in July's all-Czech Wimbledon final for her first Grand Slam title, then went 5-0 in Billie Jean King Cup play this year, extending her winning streak in the competition to eight matches.

Svitolina Dismantles Paolini as Ukraine Reaches Its First BJK Cup Final

Ukraine is going to the Billie Jean King Cup final for the first time, and Elina Svitolina delivered the clincher with authority. Facing Jasmine Paolini, who had won 10 consecutive BJK Cup matches while helping Italy to back-to-back titles, Svitolina overwhelmed the Italian #1 6-2, 6-2 in just 63 minutes. She broke Paolini five times, jumped out to early double-break leads in both sets and finished on her first match point with a forehand winner down the line.

Anhelina Kalinina had already put Ukraine in control with a 6-3, 6-4 win over 18-year-old Italian debutant Tyra Grant. Kalinina broke through at 3-3 in the opening set and never surrendered the advantage, improving to 3-0 in Shenzhen after winning both singles and doubles against Belgium in the quarterfinals. This tie never got to a deciding doubles match.

The victory also settled some unfinished business. Italy entered the semifinal 5-0 all-time against Ukraine and had beaten the Ukrainians 2-1 at the same stage last year, when Paolini rallied from a set down against Svitolina before joining Sara Errani to win the deciding doubles. This time Svitolina never gave Italy the chance. Ukraine ended the two-time defending champions’ bid for a third straight title and advanced to face 11-time champion Czechia for the trophy.

Czechia Sweeps Spain to Reach First BJK Cup Final Since 2018

Czechia is back in the Billie Jean King Cup final for the first time in eight years after Karolína Muchová and Linda Nosková swept Spain without needing the doubles rubber. Muchová opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, but Bouzas Maneiro led the first set 4-2 and repeatedly pressured Muchová’s serve before the world #8 worked her way back, broke at 5-5 and served out the set. Muchová found the decisive break midway through the second and never gave Spain another opening.

That left the clincher to Nosková, and the reigning Wimbledon champion had to navigate her own difficult opening set against Cristina Bucșa. Nosková took the first break before Bucșa fought back and forced a tiebreak, where Nosková recovered from 4-2 down to take it 7-5. From 2-2 in the second, the world #6 took over, winning the final four games for a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory.

There is a fitting symmetry to the pair carrying Czechia back to the championship tie. Nosková and Muchová met in the first all-Czech women’s singles final in Wimbledon history in July, with Nosková winning her first Grand Slam title in three sets. Now they have combined to put their country one victory from another trophy. Czechia will face either two-time defending champion Italy or Ukraine on Sunday, chasing a 12th Billie Jean King Cup title and its first since 2018.
