#5 Maja Chwalińska opened her Asian swing with a welcome return to the win column, beating Rebecca Šramková 6-4, 6-2. Chwalińska had gone just 1-5 between her run from qualifying to the Roland Garros final and the US Open, a stretch complicated by an ankle injury suffered at Wimbledon, and the victory evened her career series with Šramková at 1-1. #6 Leylah Fernandez also advanced in straight sets, beating qualifier Kyoka Okamura 6-2, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours and 19 minutes despite the tidy scoreline. Okamura created 13 break-point opportunities but converted only two, while Fernandez broke five times from 22 chances of her own.
Qualifier Joanna Garland had to go the distance, taking the opening set against wild card Storm Hunter, dropping the second and then running away with the decider for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 victory. It was Garland’s first WTA main-draw win of 2026 and earned her a second-round meeting with #3 Alexandra Eala.
