Maja Chwalińska won the all-Polish semifinal at the Wuhan Open on Saturday, beating #7 Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-1 in 2 hours, 8 minutes to reach her first WTA 1000 final. The #16 seed will play Great Britain's Sonay Kartal on Sunday, and whichever of them lifts the trophy will be a first-time WTA 1000 champion.
The first set swung twice. Chwalińska broke first, but Świątek recovered, consolidated a break of her own and led 5-3. Chwalińska saved two set points in the ninth game and won four straight games to take the set. Świątek then took a medical timeout for a leg problem, and Chwalińska won 10 of the last 11 games as the second set slipped away from the former world #1.
