Moné Retains Against Thekla as Persephone Keeps TBS Title

Mercedes Moné was not at full strength on Saturday night in Orlando, Florida, and she still found a way past Thekla. Fighting with the nose she broke in the match that made her champion, Moné retained the AEW Women's World Championship at Addition Financial Arena, catching Thekla with the Moné Maker for her second successful defense of the title.

Moné came out in a protective face mask, and Thekla went straight for the injury. She slammed Moné's head into the apron, drove her into the barricade and kept the champion on the defensive for long stretches. Moné answered with a sunset flip bomb and her meteora, but Thekla's spider suplex and spear swung the match back, and a curb stomp nearly ended the reign. In the closing stretch Moné tore off the mask and struck Thekla with it behind the referee's back. Thekla still countered the first Moné Maker attempt into a near fall before the second one landed.

Thekla Pins Kross as Triangle of Madness Tops Moné’s Team

Thekla pinned Lena Kross to win a six-woman match against Mercedes Moné’s team on Wednesday, three days before she challenges Moné for the AEW Women’s World Championship at WrestleDream. Thekla teamed with Julia Hart and Skye Blue, her Triangle of Madness partners, with whom she holds the Artist of STARDOM Championship, against Moné and Divine Dominion’s Megan Bayne and Kross on the three-hour Dynamite and Collision special at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland.

Bayne and Kross spent long stretches in control, double-teaming Blue, before the finish turned on Moné’s title. Thekla pulled the belt out of Moné’s hands and celebrated with it in the ring, and while the referee tried to take it back, Hart sprayed black mist into Kross’s face. Hart and Blue followed with kicks and a suplex, and Thekla stomped Kross and pinned her as Moné watched from the outside.

The title match was set at All Out on September 26, when Thekla beat Willow Nightingale to earn the shot and Moné came out to stare her down. It takes place Saturday at Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, and the rest of Wednesday’s six women meet there too: Bayne and Kross face Hart and Blue, who team as the Sisters of Sin, on the Tailgate Brawl pre-show.

Shafir Honors PAC With the Brutalizer as La Catalina Retains at Worlds Collide

Marina Shafir paid tribute to PAC with his own hold on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite in Pittsburgh. Shafir, Thunder Rosa and Hyan defeated AEW Women’s World champion Mercedes Moné, TBS champion Persephone and Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D., when Shafir broke free of Baker’s Lockjaw and forced her to tap to the Brutalizer, PAC’s signature submission.

Moné and Shafir were added to a previously advertised tag match, turning it into a six-woman bout. Baker pulled on her glove and played to Jon Moxley at ringside before applying the Lockjaw, but Shafir lifted her off her back, spiked her with a judo throw and went straight to the Brutalizer. Wearing a soccer jersey PAC had given her, Shafir called Moxley into the ring afterward to share the moment.

The entire show was dedicated to Benjamin Satterley, who wrestled as PAC, and Shafir returned for the main event, where the Death Riders and Bryan Danielson beat the Don Callis Family. When Lance Archer grabbed her by the throat on the apron, she countered into an armbar over the ropes. Daniel Garcia later pinned Jake Doyle after a Curb Stomp from Claudio Castagnoli.

The Brawling Birds Survive the Street Fight as Thekla Earns Her Shot at Moné

Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor retained the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship in a brutal Chicago Street Fight against Megan Bayne and Lena Kross. The fight began on the stage and quickly escalated, with Bayne throwing a steel chair into Windsor’s face and drawing blood before Divine Dominion put Hayter through a table at ringside and whipped Windsor with a kendo stick. Hayter answered by DDTing Bayne onto a barbed-wire steel chair, leaving Bayne bloodied as well, and the Brawling Birds later suplexed Kross onto a piece of steel barricade.

Divine Dominion came close to reclaiming the titles when Bayne and Kross hit Divine Intervention on Windsor onto two steel chairs, but Hayter broke up the pin. She later sent Bayne through a barbed-wire board. After Kross drove Windsor face-first into a chair in the corner and pulled out a bag of thumbtacks, Hayter smashed a beer bottle over Kross and the champions hit Two Birds, One Stone onto them for the victory. The Birds had taken the belts from Divine Dominion at All In on Aug. 30, and Saturday’s fight followed Wednesday’s ambush during their fake tea-and-crumpets gathering.

Thekla’s win carried the night’s biggest consequences. After promising things would get “toxic,” she beat Willow Nightingale to become #1 contender for Mercedes Moné’s AEW Women’s World Championship, earning a title match at WrestleDream on Oct. 17. Willow entered with a chance at another meeting with the woman who took the title from her at All In, with their series tied 2-2. Moné is reportedly not medically cleared at present.

TBS champion Persephone defeated Dani Luna by pinfall in her open challenge. Persephone had excluded Hyan, Maya World and Thunder Rosa after beating Hyan earlier in the week. Hyan and Rosa have since challenged Persephone and Britt Baker to a tag match next week in Pittsburgh. On the pre-show, Sisters of Sin’s Julia Hart and Skye Blue won the Tailgate Brawl.
